Ontario Digital Health Drug Repository HL7®FHIR® Patient Access Implementation Guide v1.0.0
Business Context
The Digital Health Drug Repository (DHDR) was established to improve the quality-of-care Ontarians receive by providing health care providers with access to a comprehensive dispensed medication and pharmacy service profile for their patients. A mechanism for Ontario’s health care providers to access drug and pharmacy service information in the DHDR has existed for some time. With the ongoing development and expansion of consumer applications for patient access, an application programming interface (API) has been developed to enable patients, their designates, as well as delegates, to access DHDR information.
Scope
The Ontario Digital Health Drug Repository HL7 FHIR Patient Access Implementation Guide is built on HL7 Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources (FHIR) standard Release 4. The implementation guide is intended to be used to guide the implementation of an application programming interface (API) that enables patients, their designates, as well as delegates, to access DHDR information.
The Ontario DHDR HL7 FHIR Implementation Guide specifies profiles for the following FHIR resources:
- Bundle
- Medication
- MedicationDispense
- MedicationRequest
- MedicationAdministration
- Organization
- Patient
- Practitioner
- PractitionerRole
- Composition
Status
This implementation guide has gone through a formal governance committee review and approval process resulting in a final status.
FHIR is an evolving trial-for-use standard, so additional changes by HL7 are expected. We will continue to monitor developments and assess whether there are impacts and publish updates as they emerge.
*SIMPLIFIER.NET is a web-based FHIR registry built by Firely that serves as the hosting platform for the Canadian FHIR Registry sponsored by Canada Health Infoway.
