Patients across the province now have access to a neurosurgeon 24/7 thanks to the provincial deployment of the Emergency Neuro Image Transfer System (ENITS). ENITS is a centralized web-based picture archiving and communication system that makes remote neuro consultations easier, faster and more accurate. Referring hospitals across the province send head scan images to ENITS where they can be accessed and viewed by neurosurgeons on-call anytime, anywhere.
In this video, Dr. Michael G. Fehlings, a neurosurgeon at the Toronto Western Hospital, explains how this functionality used to be accomplished through a patchwork system that operated primarily on phone calls and paper records. Dr. Fehlings also points out the considerable patient benefits associated with ENITS including a substantial reduction in unnecessary patient travel out of province and out of country.
ENITS means better and faster access to the right care, at the right time and in the right place. The value to the system is significant and to patients can be no less than life-saving.
