Paediatric care providers across the province currently rely on the electronic Child Health Network (eCHN) as a resource for consolidated, up-to-date patient health information. eCHN collects the data resulting from patients’ interactions with the health care system and makes them available to authorized health care professionals such as doctors, nurses, technicians and therapists in order to provide a more complete picture of a patients’ health.
eHealth Ontario has begun making provincial lab results available to eCHN users. Now, doctors caring for children under 19 throughout the province have the opportunity to seamlessly and securely search and exchange patient lab results electronically thanks to the Ontario laboratories information system (OLIS). This system reduces the number of unnecessary tests patients have previously had to undertake due to the greater availability and sharing of information among care providers. It also enables considerable cost savings in health care facilities since administrative paper-chasing is significantly decreased.
